Advisory and Study Committees, 1973-1981 (1.9 ft.). This series contains correspondence, memoranda, environmental impact statements, and reports of various committees and study groups that advised the Department of Agriculture on its wide range of programs. One group of speical importance is the Michigan Environmental Review Board. The Board reviews environmental impact statements and debates pollution control issues. Water quality standards applicable to the Great Lakes and their connecting waterways was also a major concern. Arranged alphabetically. Agriculture Commission, 1981 (1 ft.). This series contains correspondence and meeting minutes. The Michigan Commission of Agriculture deals with consumer protection, the state fairs, agricultural regulations, and legislative issues for the Department of Agriculture. Arranged chronologically. Toxic Substances Commission, 1979-1981 (1 ft.). This series contains agenda, minutes, and reports. Of concern to this Commission was the order of priority in cleaning up toxic waste dump sites so as to make this extremely difficult problem manageable in some way. Research on toxic waste effects, when to declare a toxic waste emergency, and where to look for contamination were also priorities for this Commission. Arranged chronologically.

The state's Commission of Agriculture originated as the result of Public Act 334 of 1945. This act called for a 5-member, bi-partisan commission whose members were appointed by the governor, subject to the confirmation of the senate. Membership on the commission lasted for six years. The Toxic Substance Control Commission was created by Public Act 116 of 1978, and renewed by Public Act 336 of 1982 and Public Act 308 of 1984. Executive Order 1988-4 transferred the Commission from the Department of Management and Budget to the Department of Natural Resources, effective April 30, 1988.
